WorkCentre XK35 scanner Printer

We got the printer to work for this WorkCenter but I can't get the scanner to work. I can't even get the HP stand alone scanner to work. Any ideas? I don't know where else to go for software

I upgraded the firmware from the xerox website. Is it possible that the umbuntu software is not based on the new firmware? Now what do I do?
I was hoping to share this with an xp PC

Can you please confirm that libsane and xsane are installed?
