Cannot Suspend Ub 12.04 AMD 64 bit

New install of Ub12.04.4 on AMD Athalon 64 bit Compaq dc5750S. When I click on suspend, I just get a logon screen.

HP does not have bios for this box for Linux.

When I try to suspend, I notice an evanescent message printed to the screen:
Cannot write Bytes: broken pipe

This any help?
