passed once more to 14.04 is ok, but......

I had a complicated come back to ubuntu this is the 2-3 time that i install 14.04( plus 13.04 and 13.10 etc. etc.) the1 time I install it almost every thing went right until the update than after the update I was only able to enter the system as host, now I am asked by the system to update, every thing graphic included work OK, what will I do?

How do you log in as 'host'? What is 'host'?

After installed 14.04 every thing appear normal then as usual some update were available I run the update and I was asked by the system to restart at the log in point the desktop photo was there but not the launcher or any other active object instead on the host side everything was normal and useful.
 something come to my mind, when i install the ubuntu14.04 the battery was not inserted and all the installing story is happening in India where electricity is highly unstable, could be that the cause of all the problem I encounter?
Anyway I am happy to report that the last so scary update solved the low graphic mode
