backslash key \ produces # in gedit???

Asked by DonBerlin

What would cause my backslash key \ to produce a Pound sign # in Ubuntu , including terminal , gedit, and Firefox? It is nice to have a backslash for escape sequences in scripting ie \n

backslash key works fine Under Windows XP, but not in Ubuntu 7.10En

Do I need to specify a different keyboard layout of some kind? All other keys work as expected.

thanks

Nope! I have an HP keyboard. KB-0316
I tried all the HP keyboards....No luck.

some newer laptops have a bilingual format, some keys will input alternate characters when certain occasions exist, maybe you need to hold down a certain key while hitting "\"

there may be multiple charachters on each key, thats a sign your laptop has this

hi,
i had the same problem. I am using the English and the German layout. The problem disappeared, when i changed the order of the list so that the English layout came first and the German layout was the second one.

Matti,
Thank you very much, All it took was to change the order in the keyboard list. I had the English layout selected, but it was in 2nd position. Once I moved it into the first position it worked. Thanks again!

cheers

Thanks a lot for the help. I removed the German keyboard and kept only the US English and it worked ! Wonders of wonders ! :-)
