Could not install 6.10 from live CD

Asked by frank8205

I'm new to linux and decided to install Ubuntu on a new PC. The hardware is as follows:

ECS P4M800PRO-M motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo 6700
300GB SATA Hard Drive
Samsung DVD R/W

I downloaded the iso and verified the MD5. Then I burned the CD and ran the memory test on the new pc without any errors.

When I attempted an install, after what seemed like a long time the wallpaper appeared and then an error box appeared at the upper left of the screen. The error stated:

"There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.

The last error message was:

Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in."

The install continued and the toolbar appeared showing "Applications" and other icons (including Firefox). After a time, the screen went blank. The computer appeared not to be doing anything. Hitting the "Alt" key caused the screen to turn on with the same static image of the toolbar, error message and background. The mouse pointer is in the center of the screen, but the moving the mouse did not move the pointer. There was apparently no way to close the error message window, so I could not tell if there were icons for the install beneath it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Believe it or not ... it was a bad mouse!! Connecting another mouse allowed me to move the cursor and clear the error window and then launch the install.

My system seems to be hanged during installation of ubuntu 6.10 live CD. I recently downloaded .iso image file for desktop installation and burned the CD successfully. I booted from CD and selected "start or install ubuntu" option. After sometime ubuntu desktop screen appeared with 'install' desktop icon on it. But i'm unable to select that 'install' icon on desktop because my mouse doesn't moves. It seems my system hanged. No error message appeared on the desktop. No keys on the keyboard are not working. Please resolve my problem.

Awaiting for your help....

In my case, I had a wireless mouse connected to the system through a switch (the keyboard and monitor was also connected through the switch). The mouse did not work. I substituted a direct connedted wired mouse and resolved the problem. I have not gone back to check if the switch or the mouse itself were the culprits as I am working on other issues.

I suggest that you use a known working directly connected wired mouse to get the system up and make any substitutions that you need after the system is up. The wired mouse I used was a simple wheeled mouse manufactured by Microsoft, but I imagine that others would work as well.

I replaced my normal wired mouse with USB port mouse, Now i'm able to move my mouse and double click on install icon. But now the problem is with keyboard. During installation steps, it asked to type user name. But i'm unable to type any letter. No keys on the keyboard are working. Should I replace keyboard also? Is this problem occuring only with me? or also occuring with others? Why doesn't it detect perfectly working mouse and keyboard?

I have no additional information to provide. I could not make progress with
Ubuntu, so I installed SuSE linux instead. The bug is real. I believe it is
because of a lack of support of the hardware that was installed on this
system ECS motherboard specifically. Some of the other linux distros also
had difficulty, but SuSE handled it properly.
