Try to use Synaptic (System→Administration→Synaptic Package Manager) or via terminal (Applications→Accesories→Terminal) using "sudo apt-get install name_of_package" (without quotation marks) and send error output (if any).

Thanks for the reply, ... tried the above, but the problem persists.
Through Terminal, I get the reply, 'E: Couldn't find package ubuntu-restricted-extras'

Sankar,

ubuntu-restricted-extras are in the multiverse repositories, you will have to enable them.

Got to System>Admin>Software Sources>enable the multiverse, and at your option restricted repositories.

Then install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Tried to install "gparted" - Gnome Partition editor, but failed.
Through Terminal, I get the reply,

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

You have two applications for installing programs running at the same time. An example would be having Synaptic open while trying to install from the command line.
