How can I force an app/task from memory without rebooting?

Asked by Ed Raicevic

I have had software packages hang up in memory and the only thing I can do is reboot my system to get rid of them. Before I upgraded to 12.4.0 LTS, I was running 11.04 and I had a software package that would force an app/task from memory. Can't remember the name and can't find anything like it in the Ubuntu software center. I need the name of a package and/or the TERMINAL command (if there is one) to get past this problem. Thank you.

Did you upgrade online direct from 11.04 to 12.04? Did you upgrade to 11.10 online, then to 12.04 online or did younwipe 11.04 off and do a fresh install of 12.04 from scratch?

Thanks

Would you be thinking about Force Quit? It is in Ubuntu 12.04 Software Center.

To michael: I checked my version of the Ubuntu Software Center (5.2.10) and then did a search on 'Force Quit' in the software center and it came back as not found. Am I missing something in my search?

To actionparsnip: Did a search on KILLALL and found that it was installed on my system in a package called PSMISC. Tried it and it worked. Thank you.

Very sorry, I told you the wrong way to install. Blame it on old age, I do. The correct way is in site below.

I do not remember doing this, but (you are right about Sofrware Center) I guess I did.

I followed the instructions in the site you provided and it worked perfectly. Along with the method actionparsnip provided, I now have two ways of removing an app/task from my system. To both of you, thank you ever so much. This solved my problem.
