Re-Appearance in Mplayer Distorted Pictures after Re-installing Ubuntu 12.04

Asked by Julianloui

2013 History:

Last year I was able to install Mplayer and make it work by using the following sequence of commands and then selecting the DVD icon:

sudo apt-get install smplayer,
sudo chmod 660 /dev/sr0,
sudo chgrp cdrom/dev/sr0
smplayer

2014 New Status:

Recently I had to re-install Ubuntu 12.04 and Mplayer on the same computer after the hard drive went bad. Since then Mplayer has not been the same as before. Even though a movie still sounds good out but its pictures are badly distorted.

If I attempt to repeat last year's first command, I immediately see this Package Configuration screen (apparently put up by Microsoft), essentially an EULA warning or notice to the user. There is nothing I can do to get past it. There is this <OK> button at the bottom of the screen, which does not respond and cannot be clicked on. In short I reach an impasse.

However, I still can type 'mplayer /dev/dvd' to start playing a movie DVD, with bad results.

Can someone tell me how to get past this point? Thank you very much.

As I indicated above, whenever I try to install mplayer or libdvdread4 from the command line, I am always blocked by this STUPID
Package Confiugration page, namely an EULA warning from Microsoft. At this point I am dead as a dodo! I never saw t//his when I installed mplayer in 2013.

Andrew,

I didn't find any new instructions in the URL you indicated, that I have not tried.

However, I've just learned how to deal with this STUPID Package COnfiguration page. Someone told me that I SILVANO FERRAneed to use the TAB key to answer it. At least now I can continue entering my commands. I wish that the coder of this so-called Package Configuration warning page had done a responsible job.

I'll report back when I succeed in overcoming my porblems encountered in running DVD or Mplayer. Thank
you so much as usual.

Andrew,

I apologize for the typos in my last post Since this forum is RIGID and therefore incorrigible, I'll just have to let go. After I got past the STUPID EULA screen, I was able to install Mplayer and run smplayer with the following sequential commands. Now I can use my DVD drive to play DVD disks again, at least via Mplayer.

sudo apt-get insatll smplayer
sudo chmod 60 /dev/sr0
sudo chgrp cdrom/dev/sr0
sudo smplayer

I'll report back when and if I succeed in installing VLC.

Once again I am tripped by this forum's rigidity and my own shortcoming in typing. The second command indicated in Post #3 should have read as below.
-------------------------------------
sudo chmod 660 /dev/sr0

Won't that need setting every boot?

Andrew,

I don't quite grasp your question. Can you elaborate? Thanks.

If you reboot the system do you have to run the commands again to make it work again?
