windows to samba connect to password box

Asked by orbiter100

Hi
I am trying to connect to my linux machine over a home network with an xp machine and when I click on the linux machine from windows I get a user name and password box. Tried my name and password for my linux machine but it does not work. I have no passwords or user names that I know of on samba. The network works fine from the linux end but the windows end has this stupid box. I don't know if it is a windows thing or linux and how do I get around it. I have no security on my network which is personal and in my home. I am also not a very good computer operator for linux or windows so don't get too technical. I looked through the questions and most I don't understand at all but I don't think any address this problem.
Thank you Karl

Hi, you have to configure the samba user password.

put this command where "USERNAME" is your linux user account:

smbpasswd -a USERNAME

than choose a samba password. it will enable the user to access on the samba server.
