Setting up a Media Center?

Asked by Dave Douglas

I have yet to use Ubuntu, but I am considering installing it on a HP m1072n Media Center PC inherited from my nephew. That is, after he took the parts he wanted to build a more powerful gaming machine. I will have a 3 ghz Pentium 4 with 4 GB of ram, a 500 GB hard drive and a NVIDIA 6800GS graphics card.

I would like to load my CD's and DVD's on to the PC and then hook it up to my home theater. Although I live within a mile of Microsoft, I would rather not use Windows. What flavor of Ubuntu do I use and what software do I load to do what I want?

Is there anything else I would need to know? I freely admit I have never written a line of code.

Thanks,
Dave

I have never used it myself so can't really comment on how good it actually is
but there is a LinuxMCE (Media Center Edition) that is based on Kubuntu.

You can visit their home page: http://www.linuxmce.org/
and there is a DVD available that you can download that installs both Kubuntu and all
the relative Media Center applications needed.
There is a guide here: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/DVD_Installation

Hope this helps
