from what i understand, you want to upload pictures to an online service (youtube) and the photos are on an XD card
the reader isnt working though
you have a dell machine

is this correct?

does it give any error messages or does nothing when you insert the card?

can you check the hardware information and see if your computer is detecting it
go to: System--->Preferences--->Hardware Information
try to find the card reader, read everything carefully, stuff can be overlooked easily in this

I don't know what the card is listed as. But many pieces of hardware are "unknown." I need a codec so my computer will recognize the card.

Many internal card readers are not fully supported in Linux. I ended up getting a cheap USB card reader for my digital cameras and it was worked flawlessly (and it's nice to have when I am on the go and potentially borrowing the computer of someone who does not have a card reader).

If you do want to try to get it working, you'll need more info. Open a terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and type in lspci and add the output to a reply here. That should let us know a little more about the card reader so we can see which one it is and if there is any support for it.

I saw a fair bit of info on people having similar issues with the Ricoh card reader. The directions at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=315497 appear to successfully enable use of SD and MMC cards but XD seems virtually completely unsupported. I found one claim of success with a different card reader http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-hardware-18/sandisk-multicard-reader-wont-read-xd-cards-361865/ so you can maybe get some ideas there, but it sounds like XD is not easy to get working in Linux.

Can you help with this problem?
