launchng the program

I have downloaded the ubunto and it appears to be a 695 mb iso file. How do I launch it and install it?

Also I have put it on a cd. Currently running windows xp pro.

There are many different ways to install Ubuntu (overwrite Windows XP altogether, run alongside Windows XP, run in a Virtual Machine, etc.). This documentation should walk you through the process:

You are not supposed to run the ISO file, just burn the file as instructed here:-

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

after you burn the Live CD, boot your PC using the Live CD.

Note:- It is recommended that you burn the Live CD at a speed of 4x or less so as to reduce the chances of the Live CD becoming corrupted.

You have to burn it on CD - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto and boot it.
