There is a setting called 'Keyboard Layout'. You can add your desired language by clicking the ' + sign ' .

After you added the language in Keyboard layout, normally, you will have to select the Keyboard by clicking on the small Keyboard icon that appears on top (in the launcher).

If you want to see the keyboard on the screen, open the Keyboard Layout window. Then select your language. Then you will be able to see a tiny keyboard button below. If you click on this tiny button you will see the arrangements of the letters. I haven't used this Kannada keyboard so far. In the some languages, e.g., in Malayalam. three keys are to be pressed simultaneously to get some letters. You will have to try like that if you didn't get some letters

You may try on line using this link:

http://www.google.co.in/inputtools/try/

The default Keyboard in this link is English. Don't forget to set the language into Kannada.

Click on English (given in that window) and select Kannada. Now you can type words in English as they are pronounced in Kannada. Options will be shown there. Now select the word. Copy and Paste it where it is needed.

Though that link is not Ubuntu's. It will be useful.
