VMWare Server install on Ubuntu Server 7.1

How can I install VMWare Server 1.0.4 on Ubuntu Server 7.1?
the "vmware-install.pl" executable will not run from GNOME or from terminal. Do I need a different version?
Using standard Unbuntu install with GNOME desktop installed.
