How to fix a corrupt utf-8 text file

Asked by Julianloui

My Ubuntu 12.04 system has just reported illegal characters in a .txt file and prevents me from saving it into a new file. How can I find the bad characters? I've never had this sort of problem with any text file under Windows or Linux. What may have caused such a problem? Thank you.

I have just accidentally fixed my problem by changing the encoding type to ISO-8859 text.

I've been trying to click the Problem Solved box at the bottom of the page to no avail. The reason is that the forum would not allow the question author to actuate the Problem Solved key. In other words, this forum has no way to allow a question author to indicate that he/she has solved the problem. In this case, the only way to close the case is to hit the "This Solved My Problem" box in Answer #2, which is neither true nor satisfactory.

May I humbly suggest that launchpad.net begin ASAP some minor simple enhancements such as allowing users to edit their postings as all other Linux/Unix websites do !!
