Cannot complete installation from CD. Install does not start. Extremely slow execution.

Asked by Stefan

Ubuntu version 7.10 on windows 98. BIOS from 98. Extremely slow start and execution when running on CD. When I double click on Install nothing happens. I also try other icons, but nothing happens.
When loading I got an error message: Cannot find OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet.
Suggestions?

Maybe some problem with CD, try to check it (in boot menu is option "Check CD for Defects" or so).

Send some info about your hardware please.

no problem with the cd, the fast user switch applet is a little widget that goes on the panel in gnome, it alows you to switch users....fast...:P

you say that double clicking the install doesnt do anything at all?

acpi is a power configuration management system for you computer, its not commonly found in computers before 2000,
if your _think_ your computer supports it, when booting from the cd and your at the cd menu, hit F6, and add
acpi=force
this will force acpi onto your computer, if this causes problems (Eg: computer freezes), when at the boot menu (hit F6) and add
acpi=off
this will disable it

Can you help with this problem?
