DVD playback not working on ubuntu 13.10
I have a new laptop after the old one died. On the old one I was able to play dvds with XBMC but not with vlc etc.
I have tried to now play the same dvd on the new laptop on media player, xbmc and vlc. And followed the advice to install the various codecs (css etc.) I gat the inital noise of the drive and the player looks like it will start. After half a second it stops.

I have already tried the link above. When I try to set the region of the disk I get the error:
regionset version 0.1 -- reads/sets region code on DVD drives
ERROR: Could not open disc "(null)"!
Please ensure there is a readable CD or DVD in the drive.
Its also not working with XBMC which worked before. It seems that XBMC can change the region its self.

Try starting vlc with logging:
vlc --file-logging
When you're done, there will be a vlc-log.txt file in your home directory. Post it.

Also, what kind of laptop do you have? Specifically, what GPU do you have and what driver are you using?
Please show output of:
lspci -k -q

The laptop is an Acer Aspire E1-772G. i5-4200M and Nvidia GeForce 820M.
At the moment I'm having trouble, and have another question running, about running the graphics card with Bumblebee. As far as I can tell I'm just using the on board graphics of the CPU.

Okay, so vlc should be trying /dev/sr0 , but from log file it looks like it's not. Try it manually:
vlc /dev/sr0

The dvd drives makes a noise when pushing the play button. But nothing happens, no errors either. After about 10 seconds the drive stops.

Did you set any autoplay options in Ubuntu? You could set the DVD insett to run in VLC by default. Also try installing gnome-mplayer and use that

Have set dvd to autoplay in VLC, inserted the disk and nothing happened.
Tried playing the disk in mplayer but nothing happened either. Tried playing the files in video_ts directory and that made mplayer "close unexpectedly".
Error report says unknown VMA and obsolete packages of libgl1-mesa-dri, libgl1-glx ,libglapi-mesa.

I have had to reinstall ubuntu and the dvd is still not working...
I've tried to follow the first link but still the regionset doesn't find a readable disk.
When I run vlc /dev/sr0 I get the error that it's unable to crack the CSS key.
