HP driver update
Ever since assistance with getting my HP printer working November 2013 (refer question 238859), on booting up my PC, I have been getting messages every 3 or 4 days to update the HP driver. The driver is up to date, the message to update is erroneous, and I think there must be some bug which generates this prompt. Up to now, I have been ignoring these messages as they are just a minor annoyance. But now I think it is time to confront the problem and get rid of the bug. Does anybody have a solution?

For Andrew
I have installed hplip 3.14.1 per your command (overwriting option). We will have to wait and see whether this has solved the problem.

@Barry: you wrote the following:
" I have been getting messages every 3 or 4 days to update the HP driver. The driver is up to date, the message to update is erroneous"
However, your Terminal output (copy of it below) proves that your hplip and printer-
The following packages will be upgraded:

5 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 12 not upgraded.
Need to get 7,369 kB of archives.

So it is normal that you kept getting upgrade messages about hplip...

I did the update procedure about half the times I got the message. It would say 'update successful' but I still kept getting the messages!
However now that I have followed advice of yourself and actionparsnip, I expect that it's all resolved. Thanks once again for your help.
