Installing 6.10 on amd athlon 1000MHz

Asked by diku

I have a 6 year old AMD Athlon 1000MHz powered PC. I have lost my enthusiasm for Linux after blowing £80 on Suse 10 only to discover non-existant support and an operating system that required more money to make the printer work. If UBuntu is the same in that I have to pay out to get my printer printing then don't bother responding like the Suse team did. I'll just put up with this microsoft crap.
On the other hand if Ubuntu is an operating system that arrive complete with printing and internet access that isn't 5x slower than IE6 then I would appreciate knowing if an installation for this processor is available.

There's information on system requirements at:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/releasenotes/606#head-e15a51f7ff4cac464dfd54cbed7506ef13814de3

As for printers, I have an Epson Stylus C88, and it works very well on Ubuntu.

Your issue with the printer I can say has 100% to do with the manufacturer. It is them that choose not to open up the specifications so that software can be written to interface with your printer.

What kind of printer do you have?

Wow! I thought here was another poor sod in my position - until I recognised my abrasive literary style. This works. My apologies for not appreciating that it might. Thank you for responding. I have a Brother mfc5440cn and Brother do offer linux compatibility but only after one spends upward of £500 quid on a cellarful of CUPS. But that is an old story.
Right now I am looking at a CD with Kubuntu 6.10 on it and another with Ubuntu 6.06 on it neither of which will open in Windows, or anything else.
I should tell you that I have XP on one physical drive and Suse 10 on another. I am managing them with Acronis disk Director which appears to sit in front of XP in the order of boot.
The Suse is structured with about a dozen or so logical drives and a FAT32 partition for sharing stuff with XP until the day arrives when I can get rid of it.

Now do I start wiping things out? I really need an extremely basic push on this.
