Boot issues in 12.04 lts

Asked by Peter Jordan

Following recent software updates Ubuntu either fails to initiate load of operating system . or takes several minutes between switch on of pc and the operating system loading. when eventually it loads

The system reports "Compiz closed unexpectedly" /user/bin/gtk-window-decorator.

PC has run perfectly for over a year until recent updates and this problem started.
There is clearly a problem in initiating the launch of the operating system loading. Not sure where to look to pin this problem down.

If you log off and log in to the Ubuntu 2D session, is it ok there?

I think I Have resolved the problem. I use an older ATA separate hard drive for backups, running from an external power supply and plugged in to a USB2 socket. As its not powered by the PC the PC can't shut it down. I physicaly unplug it when not in use and this seems to unsettle the boot sequence as its looking for a drive thats not there. Reporting" tmp not present or not available". I am running okay now with backup disconnected so will monitor what happens next time I run the Backup. Thanks for the prompt response.
