Video drivers for 2 Dell computers for 12.10 and newer Ubuntu. Works on 12.04
I have 2 dell computers. One is an optiplex 745. Ubuntu works fine with 12.04 but will not upgrade to 12.10 because of video driver issues. The other is similar but I don't know the model.. it is a full desktop with same issues. Where can I find video drivers which will allow me to install the upgrades to Ubuntu or must I wait for the next long term version?

12.04 is LTS and supported til April 2017. 12.10 is not LTS and has a much shorter support time frame, so an upgrade is not really needed.
What is the output of:
sudo lshw -C display; lsb_release -a; uname -a
Thanks

will get that on both computers this evening. I thought 14.04 was the next long term release and was scheduled for 2014
I will also get you the graphics card info

Be more specific. What video issues are you having? From what I can tell, the Optiplex 745 has a Radeon X1300, and that should work fine in any modern Ubuntu using open-source radeon driver.

On the Optiplex...I do not get a warning that my video graphics is incompatible with the upgrade as I do with the other dell machine noted below. But after install, I get a blank screen after updating to 12.10. I had to reinstall 12.04 and it is working fine.
On the other Dell, I get a notice that if I update to 12.10, the video graphics will cause a major decrease in operations as it is not compatible. I have tried the 12.10 upgrade and the system freezes. Had to reinstall 12.04
Both of these computers have the graphics built into the motherboard.
I did not get the specs last evening.. I have both printed out. will post tonight .. I have a 7pm meeting.. will try to do before .. and if not.. will do after
Would a graphics card be an alternative?
Thanks
Bob

The old desktop is a dell dimension 3000... forget that machine.. needs replaced... dont spend any time on that one..
The info below is likely more than you need but I didnt' know where to truncate it. I apologize
Below are the specs for the Optiplex - dual boot with Ubuntu 12.04 as stated above.. used windows to get the system specs...

Okay, so you had problems upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, but that's a fairly old non-LTS release. Try out a LiveUSB/CD of Ubuntu 13.10. That will be the best way to determine if the X1300 will work for you.

Sorry, disregard last comment about X1300. I got confused...
Still, the same logic applies. Try the LiveUSB/CD of whatever Ubuntu version you intend to use.

Thanks.. I understand.. that is a logical and should have thought of that myself solution... I appreciate your assistance.. that should show whether the video drivers of 13.10 will work.. How do I keep my programs and files? or do I have to backup or put all files on the cloud and reinstall all the programs?
thanks...will try it tonight

Reporting on previous suggestion from Daniel Letzeisen. The live CD worked. So I installed 13.10... the 12.04 did not recognize the video on board upon system inspection. When running the live CD, 13.10 recognized the video on board and worked. So I installed 13.10 over the 12.04. The install program tried to save all installed programs but could not save any. If you want a list of what was installed on 12.04 I can provide tonight. Didn't bring the list. I had moved all files to the cloud so I didn't lose any data including my installed XP virtual machine on Oracle's Virtual Box. I don't use the one in the Ubuntu install because it is not up to date. I down load and install the most current version of Oracles virtual machine when I install for first time on any computer I am setting up.
Short Version, installing 13.10 over 12.04 worked.. 13.10 recognized the video on the motherboard and all is well except I have to reinstall all the software.
Thanks so much... let me know if you want the list of software installed.. am going to reinstall the same software again.. only software not available in Ubuntu was the up to date Oracle Virtual Box and up to date Libre Office.
