When starting netbook I get error: file not found, grub rescue>

Asked by Bram van Leeuwen

On a netbook with dual boot W-7 and Ub 12.04LTS I did an update. It did not complete after a long time, so I canceled. After restart I got:
error: file not found
grub rescue>

Looking for help i found the ls command and it gave:
hd0 hd0,msdos6 hd0,msdos5 hd0,msdos2 and hd0,msdos1
Only hd0,msdos5 gave the files in root, the other partitions? gave texts as no such partition or no such file.

Booting from live dvd (connected through USB) i could start gparted which found the partitions as i remembered them; only at /dev/sda1 a red ! was shown. It is the ntfs boot partition.
sda3 is extended with sda 5 ext4 with Ubuntu and sda6 the linux-swap.

I also tried grub-install: grub-install--root-directory=/mnt//dev/sda: no such file or directory

Can somebody help?

There is a guide on omgubuntu named "sticking it to Grub "

You can chroot to the installed OS from the live CD / USB and reinstate Grub and even continue the updates.

sudo -bind etct etc
