Grub Rescue Problem arising after deleting Ubuntu Linux Partition

Asked by Julianloui

Yesterday after I experienced many problems with my dual Widows XP-Ubuntu 12.04 MacBook computer, I decided to remove the Linux partition from the computer. Now I am stuck with a grub-rescue problem whenever I power up the computer, which simply ignores the Ubuntu 12.04 Live CD and continues to dsiplay the grub-rescue menu. Since I am travelling, I don't have my Windows XP Cds with me. I also would like to keep Windows XP intact on this machine as re-installing it and the Service Packs is time-consuming. I'll appreciate hearing from anyone on how to fix this frustrating problem.

Andrew,

I finally was able to get a hold of a Windows XP restoration CD after I returned home from my trip. I booted up the 'OSX' MacBook laptop using this CD and the alt-option key on the keyboard. I then selected R to repair the system when Windows XP asked me what to do. After I entered the >FIXMBR ocmmand, WIndows XP wrote a new master boot record and I was able to regain access to WIndows XP.

My subsequent step was to re-install Ubuntu 12.04 to this MacBook laptop, which now once again runs Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows XP as before my recent computer mishap took place. Everything is now working fine

Many thanks to you again.

If you remove the partition Grub is expecting to tell it how to boot then you will get issues. You will need to use a Windows XP CD to reinstate the NTLDR boot loader and replace Grub on the MBR (which will need posting on a Windows forum. Windows XP also has zero support after 1st April 2014)

If you want to reinstate Ubuntu to the system you will need to change your BIOS boot option to look for a bootable CD first and then boot to the Internal drive. You can then reuse the old space held by the old Ubuntu install (I suggest you remove the old partitios altogether and make fresh)

Grub will then be reconfigured and the system will boot ok.
