Ubuntu 13.10 for AMD64 will no longer run on X64.

Asked by cedial

The AMD64 .ISO from Canonical for Ubuntu 13.10 will no longer install under VIrtualBox when the host is running on an Intel X64 processor. This was not an issue a few weeks back.

The install fails claiming that the release has an AMD64 kernel and that an install for the right processor must be used instead. I never ran into anything like this before. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Host machine processors: Intel Core I5 and Core I7.
Host OS's: Win 7 and Win 8.1.

Did you enable the feature in your BIOS to be able to run 64bit guest OSes? Not all CPUs can run 64bit guest OSes. The feature is called
EM64T and VT support

or similar.

Why do you want a 64bit guest? What is the purpose of the VM? You may not beefit greatly from a 64bit guest and can run a 32bit OS to fulfill your needs. If you are just wanting to web browse and chat with a VM with 2Gb RAM then 64bit OS will not benefit you.

This issue is specific to Ubuntu 13.10-64. All other 64 bit Windows and Ubuntu OS's install as VM's and run just fine. Why should this one be the only one that is different, especially when even 13.10-64 installed fine earlier?

Could install Raring then upgrade. I suggest you report a bug.

Can you help with this problem?
