iso 12.04 confusing name

Asked by Paul Gibbs

Hi,
I tried to download Ubuntu ISO for 12.04 64 bit. The download file is called "ubuntu-12.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso", notice the -amd64.iso on the end. I have an intel processor, is the amd(advanced micro devices) a mistake or is it a careless name?
Thank you.

It's an old formality. AMD were far in front of Intel getting 64bit desktop CPUs to the masses and the name just stuck. It has been that way for years now

Your Intel 64bit CPU also had to have a few of the abilities and instructions from the AMD 64bit CPUs to give software and operating system developers a chance to make them work.
