Modify the default library path(s)?

Asked by IAmDaveMyers

This question relates to this thread on the UbuntuForums.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2194232&p=12877676#post12877676

I was wondering if a tool already exists to make this process easier.

I get the impression that the OP isn't a IT nerd, but isn't a complete dunce either!

I would like to know if I should add a 'feature request' bug, to add a tool that will perform this type of action automatically.

I am aware that the various music players already support this type of action, auto inserting links to various locations (including cloud).

I just get the impression that the process is getting rather more complex than it should be, for what seems like a very reasonable thing to want to do.

Should I start a 'vote' on the forums for this feature request?

The thoughts of the launchpad community would be much appreciated and I look forward to all your comments and ideas.

I get the feeling that some form of tool probably exists, especially in the 'server' world / multi-user domain using the profile in '/etc/skel'... but what should I investigate to make my feature request more complete ?

thanks to all in advance

David.

ps. I do a fair amount of programming, but mostly in JAVA, which doesn't sit so nicely with the the C / C++ world of 'superhuman programming' (ie linux kernel / addons stuff). However maybe I could give it a shot .... if I get time.

If you mount the file system within your existing library, they will be added. Or if you mount to /media/whatever and symlink the music to the current library it will also work.

@andrew,

Thanks for the response, however I think you have missed the point of my post.

I can do this just fine.

However the if you read the thread on the Ubuntu forums that I posted to, you will notice that the user there was able to perform this action easily in Windows, but has found that his Ubuntu partition wasn't so easy to set up.

I guess I am asking if there is a graphical interface somewhere to mount / fstab so as these things would become easier for the 'normal' user.

Also in terms of sys admin on multi user systems I am sure that the location can be altered somehow in in a 'create user' script, or can be added into /etc/skel.

This then leads to the ovservation that these locations (document, Music, Videos, downloads) are visible in any of the file managers that I have used (Nautilus, pcManFM, Thunar, and whatever enlightement uses).
The idea would be to modify the configuration accordingly in this single location, using a nice tool (which could then be added as a plugin to the above file managers or other tools (eg gparted) if desired.
