installer crash- all versions

Asked by GJT

I have tried ubuntu and kubuntu 6.06 & 7.10 live and script install on my Asus p4sdx motherboard pc with nvidia graphic card. Launchiong from the DVD, everything seems to go well till the Gnome or KDE tries to come up. I get either a freeze up or a screen with 8 inch tall letters. On one of these I found the install button, but get the message that the installer had crashed. The script install does pretty much the same thing. I usually go right to safe graphic mode for the live installation attempt- I have tried this enough times to have habits!

Is there a known compatibility issue with the MB or video card?

The downloaded image does not fit on a CD, but I have it on a DVD. I am not sure why this iso cd image is bigger than a CD, so that is a second misc question.

GJT,

You may want to try using the alternative install which uses a text based installer. It is still very easy to install but it doesn't do it from inside the live environment. On http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download under the 'Start Download' button, there is a check box that says 'Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer'. This should get you on your way.

Also, could you give us as many specs of your system as possible. The processor, which nvidia card, how much ram is installed, etc.

As far as burning to a CD, it should fit perfectly on a normal CDrom disk. You may wish to refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Dear William TS

I finally got Ubuntu to install, 2 attempts after writing my post. Probably disc corruption somehow played a part, all of my computers complained about the image size on writing to CD, and I had to allow them to overburn. One of the CD's made funny noises in the drive, racing and never stopping or being recognized. The version that worked was written on a DVD. I suspect slowing down the write speed would help, but the dvd that successfully installed from was burned at 52X on the Vista side of the same PC, SInce the PC hardware never changed I am forced to suspect the fidelity of the image
in some fashion.
I am not going to start over to confirm, however.

Thank you for responding.

Glenn,

Glad to hear that you finally got it installed. If you still have the ISO image that you downloaded, you may want to check the MD5 hash to ensure that it was 100% perfect. Directions for doing this are at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM and the hashes to verify against are https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

It's easy to verify that the disk was burned properly also, to do this you can refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck

If you feel that your question has been answered, please mark it as solved.

I got this working, and advice and postings here were crucial to my doing so. I did check the version I installed last with MD5, and it was fine. The oversize iso images were probably padded by something in windows Vista and XP, where I made my first ISO copies. I now have version 7.10 working and can see my Vista files. I was booting each hard disk through the bios, but have edited the grub menu.lst to include Vista, and that works fine as well.
