Computer crash after update

Asked by Sbn

I posted this problem in another thread but it seems that I have to bumb it.

After installing some updates and restarting when prompted, my computer got past the boot-list when the screen went filled with lines like this:

I tried rebooting in all modes:

Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-rt
Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-rt (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 7.10, memtest86+

In the two first the same thing happens.
In both generic modes I end up with something that looks like the terminal, but I have no idea what to type here. I suspect this is where something has to be done, but I have no clue as I am a complete dummy.

In windows xp mode everything is normal.

I have a Zepto zNote 6214W laptop.

Thanks for all hints and suggestions!

Sorry, I forgot to include the lines I was talking about in the first paragraph:

[ 479.427746] [<c0105627>] kernel_thread_helper+0x7/0x10
[ 479.427928] ===============

that was the two last of probably a hundred.
