Please explain the mixer controls

Asked by DaveAbrahams

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-alsamixer/+bug/187848 details the problems I've had grokking the mixer. It's posted there as a usability bug, but in the meantime I would like someone to explain how the system works and what the various controls actually mean.

Thanks

please answer the question! Expiring in 15 days seems like a policy guaranteed to hide usablility ( and other) issues from the development team.

If it was described in other bugs, I'd have posted there in the first
place, or would have marked this a duplicate when I discovered
them.

I have expended considerable effort here trying to describe the problem
for the benefit of the community, and this sort of response is extremely
discouraging.

Because of bug #259945 even the on-line help is not available in gnome-volume-control. This is slated to be fixed in the next release.

For what it's worth, the manual is available on-line at http://library.gnome.org/users/gnome-volume-control/ (an overview of some of the available mixers is in the Preferences section at http://library.gnome.org/users/gnome-volume-control/2.24/prefs.html.en) but it doesn't describe all available controls (and probably could not, because they are apparently a moving target, provided by ALSA outside the control of the volume control applet) and fails to provide an overview of the underlying architecture.

http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/AlsaMixers might add to the confusion rather than reduce it, but at least it's another pointer to what is hopefully a reasonably authoritative source for ALSA documentation.

(Side note: as per bug #129497 this question should not be expired as long as it's linked to an open bug. Reminder to $self, report a regression if that happens anyway.)

Can you help with this problem?
