Graffix isue

Problem:
Screen is very dim and hard to see.

Machine:
Acer Aspire 3610I Laptop

OS:
Ubuntu 12.4

 I was working with Inksacpe and my machine locked up.
When I used "REISUB" to restart, I got a message the grafix mode had changed to some sort of safe mode.

I have tried to load the back up version for the grafix and all of the other options listed, I can't get any of it to work.

How do I fix this?
