persistent laptop battery "estimating" after Ubuntu 13.10 update installation

Asked by Ajay Anand

This is fresh 13.10 installation updated through "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" on Lenovo Thinkpad E430.

* Remaining time to fully charge the battery is persistently shown as "estimating".
* The battery status seems to be stuck at about 80% and does not change even after hours of charging.
* The problem continues after reboots.

It is a coincidence that the problem started soon after updating the system and more coincidence that cleaning the battery and the contacts didn't help the first day.

After removing the battery and cleaning the contacts again today the battery started charging up to 100% and a reasonable estimated time is displayed.

When I formatted the system, reinstalled 13.10 afresh and found the same "estimating" message, it was confirmed that it has nothing to do with the updates and that prompted me to do the cleaning once again.
