menu selection freeze on cinnamon and ubuntu (default) desktop

Hi,

I have Ubuntu 13.10 with full updates and upgrades till today. The menu selection hangs when I login with cinnamon or ubuntu(default) desktop. I can however login with KDE desktop and use the menu selection with no errors so far.

How can I use cinnamon/gnome/ubuntu(default) desktop without the system hanging. If I use the command line for starting programs I am OK. Any assistance would be most helpful.

If you run :

gnome-panel

Do you get the bottom panel ok?

If I login the session with gnome/ubuntu(default) the 'activities' button works fine. The menu selection with cinnamon session still hangs.
