Thunderbird 24.1.0 notification no sound

Asked by Janos G. Komaromi

Cannot activate sound alerts in Xubuntu 12.04 installation of Tunderbird 24.1.0. I googled and checked ubuntu forums. Lightning 2.6.2 is also installed, but calendar sound notification is silent.

Are there any bugs reported?
Do you get sound in other apps?

No, I did not report any bug. Maybe this is one.

Yes, I do get sound in any other apps.

Have you tried different sound file types?

Ogg? Mp3? Wav etc....Do any work?

Yes, they all work with Audacity or VLC. In fact, Firefox web page also can play them, and all web based sound effects, u-tube, etc. do work.

Yesterday Thunderbird was updated by Ubuntu to 24.1.1 and I had to update Lightning to 2.6.3 so that my calendar events show, but the notification sound effects or testing the various choices for sound effects still do not work.

Converted to bug because of no answers after it expired, then SOLVED!

Copied from my bug message,
Quote:
Bug closed - stupid me...
What happened was due to two things, I guess.
(1) The unorthodox location of Tunderbird Profile.
(2) *.wav file association was broken, probably because I removed distro based music player.

Solution:
(a) Right clicked on a wav file, Properties, and set "Open with" to VLC media player.
(b) In Thunderbird and Lightnin Edit Preferences Browse and point back again to my chosen sound file.

Tested and it works.

Hope it'll help someone,

I guess, I have to click on "I still need annswer" in order to change status to "Answered"

(but why?)
