replace windows with ubuntu

Asked by derek faver

I have a toshiba laptop running xp. I want to replace the system with ubuntu and scrap windows. I have downloaded 12.04 and run it with wubi but it is very slow. I cannot boot from a 11.10 disk though I have set it to boot from CD. It stops and says ISOLINUX 4.04 20110518 ETCD (Peter Awin)

Hello,

first of all use a supported version of Ubuntu.
Ubuntu 11.10 is not supported anymore. See here [1] for the supported-stable versions.

Then follow the instructions to create a bootable USB stick here [2]

and configure BIOS to boot from USB stick.

If you cannot boot from USB stick but only CD, then write the CD at the lower speed. This is important. Lower speed (2x,4x) and try again.

When you boot properly from the USB/CD you will see the option to Replace Windows in installer's window.

Regards

Thank you for helping. I did try a USB stick download but could not find out how to configure BIOS to boot from it. I used 11.10 because it would fit on a CD and I did not have another DVD, first one did not work as discussed. I will try again as you suggest.

You could always try a DVD, which your computer should boot off (written at lowest speed possible). However, if you're using a low spec system, Ubuntu isn't as good with slower PC's as it used to be, you could try Lubuntu or Mint 13 MATE instead. Either way, I hope you enjoy Linux!

Ubuntu 12.04 fits on a CD and is fully supported til April 2017. If you press F12 at POST you will get a one-time boot menu and you can select the boot media there (assuming your BIOS can boot USB)

I downloaded 12.04 iso (707 Mb) and burned it to a DVD using InfraRecorder "Write Image". I set up laptop to boot from CD with F12. Some encouraging noises were heard then the computer froze with black screen and flashing cursor, no input possible, I had to do a Hard Reset. Thanks for your help.

What video chip do you use? You may need to add a boot option to get things going

Thanks

My laptop is Toshiba Satellite Pro M40 - PSM46E-00900HEN.
I have downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 and have written it to DVD.
The computer says "not bootable" but it will boot my G-Parted disk. Any suggestions?

Hello,

can't you use a USB stick ? They are more reliable than CD/DVD disks. I gave you the URL with the instructions in comment #1

Best Regards

According to:
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2677

It's an NVIDIA GeForce Go 6600 128mb PCI-Express.

Couldn't do that yourself?

Try the boot option:

nouveau.blacklist=1

Someone said use LUBUNTU for an older laptop. I downloaded 13.10 on a CD. When I ran it with XP it offered a Boot aid program so I down loaded this and rebooted with CD as first Boot choice. At first no luck, but when I ejected CD and immediately replaced it SUCCESS at last!
