dhcp client with cidr /32 (subnet mask 255.255.255.255) problem

Asked by vidasov

Hello,

I am running ubuntu client 7.10 on my lifebook E8010 and ever since I am using linux I didn't have a problem like this.
So, while trying to connect to public wireless public network found at airport with no firewall, no wireless keys of any type I was able to connect. Point is that I got an ip address but with no possible access to internet. Deeper look of ifconfig -all faced me with :
ip address IPv4 : 172.30.0.19
subnet mask: 255.255.255.255
default gateway: 172.30.3.254

So as you can see I have cidr /32. I think problem is connected somehow with this entry.
I know that it means that I am able to communicate with myself and every other request wold be forwarded to default gateway which should answer to my ip requests.

Simple question would be: why I can't surf the web.
While trying to surf, firefox showed me a massage that server can not be found.
Is it related to some bug with dhcp client or with tcp/ip on ubuntu.

Sorry if this is a well known thread but I can not find an answer.

Best regards.
Thanks in advance.

If you go to the shell and try to ping the router, do you get a response back?

If you try to ping say, google.com -- do you get a response back as well?

Perhaps you're not just resolving addresses?

Have you tried to surf to a website using the IP address of the website?

You could try to see if you can telnet to port 80 of a website you regularly visit to see if you get a connection established. If you can ping the router but can't reach the outside world, it means that they probably expect you to go through one of their proxy servers.

Hello,

Thanks for reply.
So it was on airport, but as I can remember it was unable to ping router and 4.2.2.1 on internet as well.
For me it was unable to go anywhere else or to ping anything but myself.

Problem should be more complex than only not resolving domain names. I think this is gonna be the same next time on airport.
Did I told you that with winxp there wasn' t problems. Sorry to tell that.

Best regards.

Vidasov, I have this same problem too. I also had it with Suse 10.3 I have a Acer 5672 wlmi laptop, using a 802.11 a/b/g wireless LAN I am cyrrently in Florida using a subscription internet service named tengointernet which everytime I try to use I get the server not found message, one of the fixes it says to try is making sure the firewall allows firefox to access the internet. I can not find any way to access the firewall or even to know if I am using one. The weird thing is the Suse 10.3 did the same thing too and although both of them showed me in the wireless connection icon that I was connected I still could get no web connection at all. With the Suse10.3 I was able to use it and get a connection at a free wireless site in a public library, I am beginning to think the problem is that tengointernet does not recognise linux apps, although with Suse 10.3 I was able to set my browser to appear as windows internet explorer, still could not connect. I have manually entered the ip address, and allowed it to connect with DHCP and still nothing. I wish I could help and will watch this thread to see if anyone else has a solution as it seems we are experiencing the same thing.
