Install Japanese input method Anthy on UbuntuGnome 13.10

Asked by Massimiliano Maniscalco

My problem is I don't know how to install and use Japanese Input Method (Anthy) on UbuntuGnome 13.10
I'm not sure if here is the right place to ask this problem because I'm using an Ubuntu derivated.
Anyway before I used to install Japanese language from language settings, then activate anthy from input method settings. In UbuntuGnome I try to install Japanese language but in Language and Format settings there isn't any button to install/remove language. I did by myself from terminal, then I tried to change input method settings, but once again there's no gui to activate anthy! Tried to install anthy from terminal, but it doesn't work.
Could you please explain how to install and setup anthy from terminal?
Thank you.

Have you tried using localepurge, you can select the languages you need and the rest will be removed and the ones you select will be installed.

open software center and type anthy and then select more info and it will tell you to run some programs from a terminal and has an optional addon to mark.then run sudo apt-get update and upgrade.regards

I installed anthy, the optional add-on is just the dictionary editor which I don't need. There is a list of program to run from Terminal but they doesn't look like needed to setup anthy to work.
The first of those program is anthy-agent, I tried to run from Terminal but nothing happens...

About localepurge, I don't want to remove the languages on my system (Italian and English), I just want to add Japanese and Japanese input method.

I'm stuck! Please help!

I already installed from Terminal the following packages:
language-pack-ja
language-pack-gnome-ja
language-pack-ja-base
language-pack-gnome-ja-base

With UbuntuGnome 13.04 this was enough to make anthy to work.

I'm getting close to the solution of this problem.
I run from Terminal
im-config
and choosed ibus as a input manager, then I run
ibus-setup
to configure ibus and add the input engine anthy. Now I can check which engine is in use with
ibus engine
and I can change engine to anthy with
ibus engine anthy
In this way I can write japanese in every application, Terminal included!
To go back to the original engine I have to run
ibus engine xkb:it::ita
Well, it works, but I can't change input method if not by running commands on Terminal!
When running ibus-setup I can choose which combination of keys to press in order to switch to the next input method, but it doesn't work. Does anyone know why?
Please help!

Finally I found the solution!
After installed japanese packages, ibus, ibus-anthy, anthy you can set up everything from system settings.
Region and Language -> Input source
Here you can add anthy, after you do that the shortcut Super+Space and Shift+Super+Space will work to switch from an input method to another.
The solution was so easy, but to be used to the old procedure made me blind.
I hope this can help someone else in trouble like me.
