Evolution is on the launcher, but no window comes up for it.

Asked by Phil Norisez

After installing 12.04 from a downloaded CD, I installed Evolution. Under "About..." it describes itself as version 3.2.3, with a copyright ending in 2008. In the Edit/Preferences/MailPreferences tabs I can find NO entry for "New Mail Notification" to say nothing of the "play a sound file when new mail arrives". Is this intentional?

I also tried adding a rule to play a sound and it never seems to be applied.

This seems to be hardware dependent, as I had this working on a Lenovo R61i, but cannot make it work on a VAIO.

***********

I discovered the plugin for doing this, enabled it and gave it a .wav file to play. I can't tell for sure, but it appears to be working. The reason that I can't tell for sure is that now no window ever appears for Evolution! I have tried reintalling it witht he same result.

Is it not in the sound settings in the Dash?

My Dash contains no "Sound Settings". However, there is a Sound in System Settings. This only has 4 tabs: Output, Input, Sound Effects, and Applications. The "Applications" tab only says "No application is currenlty playing or recording audio." It also offers a volume control and mute check box.

I now have the Evolution window and the sound being played. However, Compiz (I think I got that name right) crashed and needed restarted. Is there any connection?

My original problem appears solved. I'll file a bug report on the compiz crash if it recurs. Thanks to actionparsnip for the responses.
