Ubuntu 13.10 root password

Asked by budi machribie

Hi,

I have inadvertently change the administrator password to standard with the result that I cannot make changes anymore with the former admin password.

How do I get the admin password back..?

Regards

Do you mean your user's password or actually root's password (which you should not set)

Why are you settling the root password when you have sudo which gives you all the access of root for users in the sudo group?

This sort of thing is WHY the account is NOT set andd gives you a get out method.

Why set it?

@actionparsnip ..it's because I can go straight into Ubuntu without entering a password ..it means other people can open Ubuntu too without entering a password

( double boot Win-xp/Ubuntu)

You don't need a root password for that, you can have autologin for ANY user you want. You don't need to set the root password for that at all. They won't need to enter a password and will be logging in as user which is the advised way due to simple system security.

You should also make individual user accounts for people, this allows them to have their own settings and so forth. Having everybody use root is a very foolish thing to do.

Can you log in as the first user you made when you installed the OS which you SHOULD be using to use the OS? It will have sudo access, so can dig you out of the hole you have dug yourself into.

@actionparsnip

I can log in by using my password which I have change to standard from administrator

How could I add new user when I don't have the root password (sudo) anymore...?

Following message appears ...budi is not in the sudoers file

The first user you made at install time can use sudo. Any subsequent users you make will NOT have sudo access unless you manually add them to the sudo group.

Did you really think the OS worked like that. Scary stuff
