Internet connection problem

Asked by Ted Pritchard

I have a D-LinkDSL-G604T wireless ADSL Router. Two PCs are connected to it by ethernet. One PC runs Windows XP and internet access is perfect. The second is a legacy PC that I have been trying to install Xubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso. The legacy PC is a Celeron 1.8ghz. I've followed the connection instructions as per the documentation.
The network icon on the desktop indicates that I have connection to the router. I can also access the router operating menus from the legacy PC.
But no internet connection via Firefox or from the Add/Remove module.
When installing Xubuntu I did get a message saying security repositories couldn't be accessed.

Please open on the two different pc a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

ifconfig -a

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Copy and paste the result of the command typed on the two different pc here.

Thank you

As my router is nothing unusual and as the configuration values seem to be correct, but still I can't get a connection, have I exposed a pretty fundamental bug in this particular distribution?
The legacy PC I'm trying to get Xubuntu to work on is being set up for a friend's granddaughter and I selected this distribution because it has minimal memory requirements.
If my elderly friend goes to the expense of adding more memory will I have better luck with Edubuntu or am I likely to run into the same problem?
If getting an internet connection is anything other than straight forward and reliable, it won't be a practical option given the likely limited knowledge of my friend's 8 yr old granddaughter (and possibly her parents in any other environment outside of Windows).
Help please.

Many thanks for that. The answer to question #3498 didn't directly allow me to get going, but it gave me enough to discuss it with D-Link support who very helpfully (and promptly) filled in the remaining blanks. I now have a working connection.

Regards and thanks to all, Ted
