Error in 13.10 when deleting a user

Asked by tadiv

While trying to work through question 237662 (here https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/237662 ) I deleted a test user while chosing to leave that user's files in place and received the following error message:

GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.Accounts.Error.Failed: running '/usr/sbin/userdel' failed: Child process exited with code 16

The user was not deleted... It also seems that even thought I logged out of that user's session, that user is still logged in (though there was not an error message that said I could not delete a user that was logged in)...

I'm going to log everyone off (with a restart) and try again - I'll report back in a few minutes...

OK - after a reboot and liging in straight into the admin user, I was able to successfully delete the user (that user, BTW, was a "standard" user without a password but not set to auto-login)... So seemingly, my problem was solved - but there was still the bug...

Should this problem be left open to drive a bug report?

The return code 8 means: user is logged in at the moment. You can't delete a user while he us logged in.

OK - so the bug is: I selected that user to logout via the menu option in the upper right, but the user did not logout...???

Is there some action that needs to be taken to fix the "bug"?

No its normal. You need to end all the processes of that user. You can then delete the user. This is the same on ANY UNIX based OS, also its the same in Oracle and BSD.
