Teamviewer does not install under Ubuntu 13.10

Asked by currter

I am not sure if this has been solved, but I went through a lot
of time and pain to upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10 only to find out
that Teamviewer does not seem to install properly without
some dependencies issues.

I am kind of tired of this and I sent email to Teamviewer in case
there is something in their power to make this software compatible with
the new operating system upgrade.

I may just go back to a previous Ubuntu installation (12. something) or
someone told me to try Lint ?

Teamviewer is wonderful and I have not problems on Mac and Windows
and I used these systems more so than Ubuntu Linux and it would be nice
to have this level of consistency so I can get used to using Ubuntu Linux more
but as they say you get what you don't pay for ...

Thanks.

What is the purpose of using team viewer? What do you intend to do on the system once you connect? There are often much sleeker ways to what people use teamviewer for. Using fewer resources and doing the same thing faster

Well that is fine, don't fix it. I will just forward your comments to Teamviewer
and maybe it will fix.

It is just nice to use Teamviewer for clients to assist with their computer problems
mainly for Windows and I use the Mac more now anyway. Linux was just an extra
operating system to play with and it was just nice to have Teamviewer around.
But if you don't care about it then fine, I will just use Ubuntu less after all it
was just for play anyway to keep up with some Unix skills lost after dealing with
Windows for so long. Mac has helped me get back some Unix skills.

Also I have had problems running Slingbox software even using Wine on Ubuntu.
It is just a struggle trying to balance all of these operating systems and one has
to give and I guess it will be Ubuntu.

I use Mac and Windows more so I will stick to those and leave Ubuntu alone for now
until I feel I can use this software without issues.
You really should be more encouraging of people trying to use your operating system
instead of repelling them.

Thank you

It makes no sense that Teamviewer worked under a previous version
of Ubuntu (I have it working under 12.04 LTS on a separate partition
I installed for a client as an alternative OS in case Windows Vista
has an issue on the main partition)... See I was trying to promote Ubuntu.
but I seem to have problems under 13.10... I think it was working under
the previous version 13.04.

Why the change?

In any case I really don't care and will just use the Mac for everything
as Windows 8 hangs and "Not Responding" messages. I am happier with
the Mac. Ubuntu was just there for play and an alternative and I even somehow
am running 3 operating systems off my Mac (Ubuntu under the Windows partition
which is under Mac's Boot Camp). 750 GB HD helps.

I will just wait until you or Teamviewer fixes the problem.
I don't care anymore.
Bye!

The ia32-libs package has been removed so it makes total sense and it is still in the older versions. This expains exactly why it works....

sure, there may be other or better or sleeker ways to remote connect into
computers (file transfer, controlling ...etc.), but this customer
wants to use Teamviewer (what ever happened to the customer is right?)
and maybe you should be sensitive to that?
Why not support all the software available that can and has run
within your operating system without issues?

well do what you want it does not matter to me.
I was just trying to point out something

Back to Mac

A simple look at the package's changelog shows you...

Simple stuff right.

Whatever... I don't need to use Ubuntu much anyway...
I was just trying to promote it personally and for a customer...
so if it does not work (Teamviewer) ... that is fine

We will just deal with Windows and Mac.

Thank you for your efforts.... moving on.

You also haven't answered how I an "repelling" users by asking a reasonable question. Maybe you should look closer to home as to where the problem is.

we are so sorry, we are not as smart as you are with these things
and maybe we do not have all the time to figure these things out
in a rush ...

If you can just make things simple, it would be great.
As I said, Teamviewer installed just fine in previous versions
and it caught us off guard that it did not in this new version.
We did not know we had to jump through hoops
as you may be stating.

Maybe if we have time, we can explore those things.
But we are stupid compared to you. you are the masters.

Thank you anyway.

Ive had people connect to desktops then run terminals and work entirely in cli. In this case the full desktop is a conplete waste and only ssh connectivity is needed. This would allow a sidestep of the issue as the user has chosen a poor solution for a problem. So Ibalways ask (politely) what the purpose of the connection is so I can advise better solutions. You interpretted this as some form of agression or attack for some reason. If you reread what I actually wrote you will see this is all I wrote.

The customer is not always right. The customer may be right but users are often ignorant to other solutions and nearly always reach for full remote desktop access whichbsimplybisn't always needed.

So i wasnt repelling users from using Ubuntu, i was pointing out that maybe other solutions exist. You chose a poor way to het your point across and it was inaccurate wheras mine was innocent and had best interests in mind.

Thats why i ask. So I can advise. Its nothing to do with ability. Its about getting a great solution for the user. You seem to be missing the point entirely.

Hi Terrance,

Please open a Terminal and run these 4 commands to install Teamviewer 8 in Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit:

sudo dpkg -r teamviewer

cd /tmp

wget http://www.teamviewer.com/download/teamviewer_linux.deb

sudo dpkg -i teamviewer_linux.deb

Source: http://www.teamviewer.com/en/help/363-How-do-I-install-TeamViewer-on-my-Linux-distribution.aspx#other

I quote:

"
Notes to Multiarch:
On newer 64-bit DEB-systems with Multiarch-support (Debian 7) teamviewer_linux_x64.deb cannot be installed because the package ia32-libs is not available anymore on these systems. In this case you can use teamviewer_linux.deb instead.

In case you get the error “wrong architecture i386” you have to execute the following command lines:

dpkg --add-architecture i386
apt-get update

Well, it would have been nice to know that there was an issue of
possible incompatibility with the 64 bit version unlike what was
experienced before in the Ubuntu 13.04 or 12.10 LTS with this
new version.
How was I to know to revert to the 32 bit version to make this
work?
It is all fine now, I was able to use the 32 bit version and even
Teamviewer admits there is a problem.

I really don't need to be harassed with your insensitive comments
on this. I am pretty much done with this and really don't use Ubuntu
much except for experimental and was promoting it for clients as
an alternative to Windows.

Well take care...signing out from my Macbook Pro!

_______Teamviewer's comments below on the issue__________

Hello Terrance,

Thank you for contacting Teamviewer

We got some news from our developers that this is unfortunately a known problem in the current version. Our developers are already working on a solution and this will be fixed as soon as possible. We are really sorry about the inconvenience.

To resolve the issue and be able to run successfully on Ubuntu 13.10 then please run the 32-Bit / Multiarch version and you will not incur any issues.

The dependency has been removed from saucy https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/amd64/lib32asound2 and Ubuntu 13.10 will not allow the installation of the package as it has been updated. You can download it from: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/a....0.25-4ubuntu4, but a force install will not work in this case.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.

Best regards,

Sebastian Gogola

and those clients wanted to continue to use Ubuntu and not
some other alternative software recommended by Ubuntu.

I thought I closed this thread saying the solution was found
so I do not understand why a partially profanity word would have to be used
"butthurt"? meant to be insulting and possibly harassing.

Please, we can end this. I am done with Ubuntu now.
The client is happy!

Furthermore,
the client and I are using 64 bit machines and so the first thought
was to download the Teamviewer for the 64 bit architecture
under Ubuntu. For some reason there was major difficulty encountered
installing that using the Software Update program (missing libraries...).

In the end I guess I had to issue some Unix commands to
get this to work using the 32 bit version. As a customer,
I should not have to do all that and go through all this
trouble.

Things should have been simpler installing this as other software
installed fine or was not as complicated as this Teamviewer issue was
and was not this difficult under previous versions of Teamviewer.

that is all. there is no need to use "butthurt" or possibly other profane words
(representing your character) to insult here any longer.

Thank you.

@Terrance: please mark the thread status as "solved", if the issue is still solved.

I see that my procedure (post #15 from October 19) solves your issue, even though my instructions on October 19 were ignored...

http://www.teamviewer.com/download/teamviewer_linux.deb is the 32-bit version of Teamviewer....

Revision history for this message
currter (currterr) said :

I am not sure if the instructions were ignored or not.
Really, I guess my point was that if one is to use the Software Update
software Ubuntu provides and it is for a 64 bit machine, then that
should have worked without having to issue any terse UNIX commands
to help install Teamviewer. I did not have to do that before... I just downloaded
the .deb or whatever file from Teamviewer and it installed without hassle.
This time it seemed as if I had to do something extra using UNIX commands
in a terminal window to get this to work for the client and me and under
a little pressure and time constraints.

Maybe there had to be a better interface and maybe this was not Ubuntu's
issue and something Teamviewer, which acknowledged there was a problem in
email to me, should work on.

I will let you , the professionals work it out.

Thank you.

How can I really close this ticket as I really don't want to see anymore
email regarding this.

Thank you.

Maybe I should close this account.

I only opened this a few years ago because I could not get Slingbox or Sling Media
to ever work properly in Ubuntu. I could never get it work under Wine
nor could I get the plug-ins to work in the browsers (Firefox, Chrome... )
that work so well under Windows and Mac. I just washed my hands of it
because it was just too difficult for the average person and I spent hours
trying to get that to work under Ubuntu and it still does not work.
And that MythTV software thing, it for some reason takes up the entire screen and
I lose control of the computer or click on something to shut it down so I have
to bring up a Terminal window and find the process for it to kill -9 it.

It is just these little things that add up that kind of makes Ubuntu not a good
experience (a little frustrating) to work with and thus I go back to Mac and grudgingly Windows.
Maybe all that came out in this latest set of events. Oops.

Take care.

I just downloaded, installed Mint (sorry I said LInt as that is what the T-Mobile guy said)...
I was able to EASILY install the Teamviewer 64 bit under Mint, though Slingplayer still does
not seem to work.
For the installation of Teamviewer under Mint, I did not have to issue any terse UNIX commands
either so far.

Mint seems to have a better layout than Ubuntu ... so I guess I will jump ship
to Mint though there are references to Ubuntu still :)

I EASILY installed Mint on my Macbook (bootcamp partition under or shared with Windows 8).
Teamviewer 8 installed fine without issuing any cryptic UNIX commands.
Also it was an easier install with installation of Broadcom wireless drivers than
my experience with Ubuntu that before required issuing some UNIX commands to
activate the wireless card and was only corrected in an Ubuntu upgrade some time ago
(I forget the transitions 12.04 to 13.04 ... perhaps).

I have always had to struggle a bit to get things to work under Ubuntu issuing
command line UNIX commands to install things in Terminal when things could be easier
or an easier user interface downloading and installing and updating packages.

I did not have to do any of this under Mint.

The only outstanding problem is Slingbox/Slingplayer does not still work under
both Ubuntu and Mint ,but it was easier under Mint though it did not fully execute
under Wine.
Also the plug-ins don't seem to install under Firefox or Chrome as they do using
those same browsers in the Windows and Mac environments.

Ubuntu's user interface layout is a bit confusing and strange compared to Mint's
that looks like Windows or even Mac.

Oh, I could not get Teamviewer to install in its 64 bit version even after some more
updates recently to Ubuntu that took a long time to install after not using Ubuntu
for a few weeks.

I can say now I am pretty much done with Ubuntu in favor of its other flavor or
sibling Mint.
I may be reinstalling the Linux type for the clients and encouraging them to switch to
a Mint of fresh air.
