Compatibility with Intel Core i7 3770K and MB ASROCK Z77 PRO4

Asked by Endre Varga

Hello, I need to install Linux because of my study and I already tried some versions of Linux, but the dvd-s did not start, stood my system hanging. I suppose this may be because of compatibility problems with my motherboard or CPU. Can you please advise which version of Ubuntu I should try with this hardware?

Intel Core i7 3770K
ASROCK Z77 PRO4

All the Ubuntu variants can be tried without installing I suggest you do this first.

I'd recommend the 64-bit version of Ubuntu which you can download from here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

The choice of 13.10 or 12.04 comes down to whether you want the latest features (13.10) and are happy to upgrade in six to nine months or you want the more thoroughly tested LTS release (12.04) which is supported till 2017. My personal choice would be 12.04.

Full instructions on how to install are here:
http://askubuntu.com/q/6328/107450

Before you install however, I suggest you select "Try Ubuntu". This will run slower than a full install but will allow you to check that everything works properly: sound, internet etc.

If you have any problems you can ask about them before you commit. if not install and you're good to go.
