need to boot in single user tty mode - no GUI

My X-Windows on 7.10 is stuck in a funny mode. I can not login. Using the ctl-alt F2 to get a character console results in a character login but X-Windows still keeps trying to start and crashing.
My computer is a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527.
I would like to boot the system up in a single user character terminal mode -- i.e without X-windows -- so I can mount a USB drive and back up my files.

Thanks for the hint. My solution was to boot from the CD, plug in the USB disk, and copy my files to the USB disk.
