If you are running synaptics, then there is obviously a driver working for it and it is running.
To say more I need you to run this command in the Terminal and port the output:

sudo lshw -c display; lsb_release -a; lspci

You don't need any. The intel driver is in a default install. There is an Intel driver installer. You could try that.

goes to a page that is all crossed out go to the next page try to do that "In order to "trust" the Intel® Linux Graphics Installer, you will need to add keys to Ubuntu's software package manager ("apt"). Open a terminal, and execute these line:

wget --no-check-certificate https://download.01.org/gfx/RPM-GPG-KEY-ilg -O - | \
sudo apt-key add -

wget --no-check-certificate https://download.01.org/gfx/RPM-GPG-KEY-ilg-2 -O - | \

The problem with 'not authenticated' software was caused by the download.01.org server. Apparently when you added that server as potential software source, you did not download the public key that is required to verify the integrity of the downloads from that server.

Doing the terminal command
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 8D8847D52F4AAA66
should import the public key to your local repository and make that mesage for that server disappear.

To verify the reason for the message
"The following packages have been kept back: gnuplot-nox gnuplot-x11"

please issue the terminal command
apt-cache policy gnuplot-nox gnuplot-x11
and copy/paste all output into this question document.

And to check whether the upgrade to 13.04 went ok, please provide also the output of the commands
lsb_release -a
uname -a

The gnuplot package for raring allows only installation of one of gnuplot-x11 and gnuplot-nox, but no more both at the same time as the previous version did.

I guess you should remove gnuplot-nox and let gnuplot-x11 be upgraded to the current version.

sudo apt-get purge gnuplot-nox
sudo apt-get update

After these commands your system should be fully upgraded.

And then back to your original question about "a driver that will work for this"
According to the lshw output there is an Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller in your system, using the i915 driver. Is there anything wrong with it that you look for another driver?

"ok when I plug in the screen it's black" When you plug what into what?

Ok, now your problem becomes clear to me:

You have a compaq dc 7100cmt which has an Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller. Google earth refuses to work with the message that your graphics card is not good enough.
So you bought an Aries n279 graphics adapter, but there is no output on that one.

Is this correct?

When plugging that Aries video adapter into your system, how do you make sure that your system uses that card and stops using the integrated Intel graphis adapter - is there video output on the Intel adapter's output connector? (Maybe a BIOS setting needs to be changed to disable the builtin video.). If you succeed in enabling that card, what is the output of "sudo lshw -c display"?

Another potential way forward: What exactly does google earth complain about? Maybe you could change the display settings of your intel card (resolution, colour depth) to meet the minimum requirements?

Is this correct? yes but there is a out put for video on it

how do you make sure that your system uses that card and stops using the integrated Intel graphis adapter--- i have no clue on that one was told it would pop up in software & Updates > Additional drivers then pick it nothihere

is there video output on the Intel adapter's output connector? -- no on the mother boaed
one vieo output on the computer and one one the video card

If you succeed-- funny, is where i hit the wall

#27

Sorry, but I do not understand your answers:
in #24 it was: when I plug my Acer screen into the Aries n279 it's black
in #26 it now is: "there is out put for video on it"

Please describe as detailed as possible how the (planned) setup of your system is.
How do you connect that Aries card to your computer, what possibilities do you have to connect your screen to your computer (to the integrated Intel and to the Aries device)? If you test all possibilities to connect your screen, on which of these do you see something on screen?

what is the output of:

ls /var/cache/apt/archives | grep gnuplot

Thanks

as you have this:

 gnuplot-nox : Conflicts: gnuplot-x11
 gnuplot-x11 : Conflicts: gnuplot-nox

We can force install both packages and the deps will be met :)

Sorry, again your answer looks contradictory to me:

"there is out put for video on the video card"
"video card not working"

So is there data from the Aries card or not?

Is there a possibility to disable the builtin Intel display device in the BIOS?

"there is out put for video on the video card" YES THERE IS :)
"video card not working" NOT WORKING I want to get it to work

So is there data from the Aries card or not? DONT KNOW is there a way to find out?

Is there a possibility to disable the builtin Intel display device in the BIOS? DONT KNOW HOW OR IF ONE CAN but if I turn that off before the video card is running I will not be able to see

It seems that I formulated my questions in a way that they caused misunderstanding.

I wanted to ask, if you have ever been able to test if there are data transmitted by the Aries video card when plugged into your computer. (According to your latest answer this seems not to be the case.)

What I want to suggest:

Boot you computer with the screen connected to the builtin Intel video and enter BIOS settings (You have to press a certain button, maybe F10 or F12, quite early during the boot process).
Look in the BIOS settings screen, if there is somewhere a possibility to disable the builtin video card (just look for it, do not change anything)
Poweroff you system and plug in the Aries video card, leave the screen connected to the builtin Intel video device's connector.
Boot again.
Does the screen display something? If not, unplug the screen from the Intel video's connector and connect to the Aries card's connector, do you see something now?
What is the output of
sudo lshw -C display
in that configuration?

The output has identified only an Intel Integrated Graphics Controller.

Was the Aries Card plugged in when you ran that command?
Was the screen connected to the builtin graphics adapter, or to the Aries card?

It seems that you computer does not recognize the Aries praphics adapter at all.
Maybe disabling the builtin video card in the BIOS changes that.

Can you provide the BIOS version that you have (see http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&tmp_geoLoc=true&docname=bph07110#N1290 )

ok I have found a drive for it. the other name for the video card is, Radeon rv710 hd4350. (would have been nice to know that it had another name at the start sorry)
Ok I now have the driver "ati-driver-installer-10-7-x86.x86_64.run" in my download file.
can someone tell me what I do next to (install & run) if there the right words. thank you all.

All output that you have provided so far shows only the builtin Intel graphics adapter.
So it seems to me that either the Aries card is not correctly inserted, or there is something in the BIOS that disables that graphics adapter. This has to be solved first. Only when the system correctly identifies that graphics adapter card, additional software can change something.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Bob for more information if necessary.
