As a side issue that may be realed Ubuntu software centre always closes about 2 seconds after being opened.
It looks like to me my current system needs sorting before it can be upgraded
Any ideas where to go from here.
Thanks

I find this a good guide to clean up your sources and prepare for upgrade (and also to solve list errors like the one you encountered): https:/
If it doesn't help give the output form all of the commands in step 5.

hey! try to boot to 12.10 from recovery mode and run steps: 1.enable network or plug network,2.update grub, 3. clean system ,and 4.run from terminal ,mode the commands apt-get update,/upgrade . then
it is important to follow 2 steps. : 1boot normally and try to upgrade from software center and if it not works try to do it from recovery mode.
also please check in the options of software properties if you have marked canonical or other sources that made your system not upgradable .check carefully.that must be it. regards

Daniel
I have tried the package manager trouble shooting procedure recently
details on previous question here:
https:/
Yet straight after I was given the all clear here I had the same system problems again.
I can try again if you think it would help what do you think havingt seen my previous question?
Thanks for the help

Sorry, copy/paste error in last comment. Should be:
rm /var/lib/
sudo apt-get update

I see two issues in your output:
1. "The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 16126D3A3E5C1192" and
"The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5"
This can be solved by issuing the terminal commands
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.
2. "E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/
This can be solved by issuing the terminal command
sudo rm /var/lib/
Please execute the commands as given above, and then try the commands
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
and copy/paste all outptu into this question document.

Hello
I now have several different instructions as to what to do next so let me explain what I have done so far.
1. As Daniel's option had been tried already I have not done this but have posted the details of the output (as given in a previous question)
2. I then followed Anna's instructions - details of what happened below
I will not use the commands above from Manfred untill I get a confirmation hat this is OK just as he was unaware of the instructions I was following from Anna so I realise his instructions might now change given what I have already done
So I followed some of Anna'd insructions as detailed below:
1. I booted Ubuntu in recovery mode
2.I ran enable entwork
This ran OK until I got the following things listed:
"Modem Manage [936]:(info) succesfully loaded Zo plugins
network-manager start/running, process 951"
The screen then stayed here and after running the computer all night nothing had changed.
I then shut down - the system shut itself down properly it was not a pull out the plug job.
I then rebooted in recovery mode
3. I ran update grub and this worked with no problems
4. I ran clean system
I got the following error message:
"problem with mergelist/
the purchase list or status file could not be parsed or opened"
As I had had the errors I stopped there before continuing
Where should I go from here?
Apologies if there are errors in the quoted screen messages as I was in recovery mode copy and paste was not available and so messages were copied down with pen and paper and so mistakes may have been made
Thanks
Sam

Run these commands, and if they don't work, then go through the whole troubleshooter again. It doesn't matter that you did it two months ago...
rm /var/lib/
sudo apt-get update

OK I have been through the trouble shooter. I skipped to step 3 as it instructed as I was unable to launch update manager
I entered all the commands one by one from step 6 and the output of this is below.
Thanks for all the help so far!

Running thw package manager troubleshooting procedure seems to have solved your issues. The output confirms that all outstanding updates have been applied to your system. I hope that also software-center now is working again.
As your system now is in a consistent state with Ubuntu 12.10, it should be possible to upgrade to 13.04.
You can do that either with update-manager (there should be an information "a new release is available - do you want to upgrade?"), or by using the terminal command "sudo do-release-
In case the system still does not behave as you expect, or if unexpected error messages are shown, please provide as much information about that as possible, at least the exact error text (if any).
If you succeed in upgrading to 13.04 and if your system runs well (no messages about broken updates etc.), please mark this question document as "solved".
