ubuntu 7.10 stops responding after boot

After the computer fully boots to the desktop, Ubuntu 7.10 stops responding completely. No mouse or touchpad clicks show any result. The mouse pointer moves normally, just no response from any clicks.

any idea what could be the problem? Can you be a bit more specific?
try hitting ctrl+backspace+alt. and then relogin
