Monitor gets corrupted

Asked by Peter

I have bought an AMD Athlon XP2000 computer and put Ubuntu 7.04 32bit on it.
When it starts up I get the line starting and the instead of the usual Ubuntu loading progress bar I get "out of range" until the login window appears.
As the computer is used parts of the screen become corrupted or even replaced by previous data that was on the screen from another application. By minimising and restoring the window I get the correct display back again.

On shut down I get ioctl innaprpriate something. Too fast to read.

I have searched all the system logs for ioctl but not found it.

The Xorg.0.log has AIGLX screen 0 is not DRI capable.
I dont know what that means.
I dont know if the graphics card is faulty or if there is a software problem.
The bootup memory test has not shown any errors.
Thanks for your time.

Hi!
boot into recovery mode. To do this, reboot the system, when the bios screen disappears you will see a grub message at the top of the screen and a 3 second countdown. Press the ESC key before the 3 second countdown is finished. This will bring up a boot menu. Select the recovery mode (usually the 2nd option).

The system will now boot into a black screen with a prompt. At the prompt, type sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Good luck!

Bhavani Shankar.

Hi Bhavani,
Thanks for your reply.
I have tried a few variations in that with no luck.
The computer chip set is VIA KT 400 and the monitor is Acer AL512.
dpkg-reconfigure suggests using the chip set model which is VIA and is in the list presented but that always fails.
It autodetects SIS but as previously mentioned I get corruption.
I have windows ME in a partition and it works but the control panel display section gave me no useful information. Any ideas?
Regards
Peter

Hello Peter..
If your video card is SiS there are some drivers for SiS cards in development.. You can refer to this page to check the status:

http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/SiS.

Unfortunately that means that there is no support for accelerated graphics for your card and it won't change shortly.

Sorry for BAD NEWS

Bhavani Shankar.

Hi Bhavani,
Thanks for your reply. Back from holiday. Have you any suggestions for a cheap card I could buy until a driver in linux becomes available. Also how do I find what the SIS model is?
Regards,
Peter.

More info.
On the graphics card it has PV-S04A-BR V4.1 W08/03 XP-380 32 MB SDRAM AGP VGA
and google shows this to be SIS 315E
On checking the above website I see SIS 315 is not supported.
What graphics card is supported. I don't need an expensive top of the line card, just something for browsing online with dial up etc.. No elaborate game support needed.

A google search found http://www.wlug.org.nz/A531Laptop
in which the person with an SIS 315E card used the vesa driver.
It works! No monitor corruption. I still get out of range at start up and shut down but who cares.
In sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg I also chose frame buffering but that did not work with the SIS driver.
