What says command "glxinfo" (without quotation marks)?

Some error output when trying to enable desktop effects?

Send content of file /etc/X11/xorg.conf please.

Which version of ubuntu are you using ? Gutsy ?
Desktop visual effect doesn't work in Gutsy with X3100. But they will work with Hardy.
