wlan interface number is incrementing upon abnormal shutdown in ubuntu arm

Asked by satya gowtham

wifi card with beaglebone black on ubuntu is working good. But on next boot after an abnormal shutdown I can not connect to wifi. I have to run iwconfig and find out wlan interface and update the /etc/network/interfaces with appropriate wlan interface - mostly wlan0 becomes wlan1 becomes wlan2 .... -. Here is my iwconfig

$ iwconfig
wlan3 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=0 dBm
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:on

ppp0 no wireless extensions.

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

usb0 no wireless extensions.

In the above on next abnormal shutdown wlan3 becomes wlan4.

Can you run the diagnose command from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure Step 2 and post the output? Thanks!

You can make udev rules which use Mac addresses to set the interface name

You are mixing Debian debs into your OS which WLL cause issues with dependencies. I suggest you reinstall.

This problem occurred before I included debian repository and I have taken care not getting installed any other package except libwebsockets from debian repository. Please ignore that. On the other beaglebone, on which I never included debian repository, the problem persists.

I guess the problem is related to USB. You have the the network interface behind a hub that is behind a hub with several other devices attached. This might me a bit too much load on the USB bus. USB is a bit bitchy on that.
There is an other Bus available, try to connect the WiFi dingle to it or at least on the first hub. Also try to disconnect all the devices you don't need and see id it works then.
