Edgy - USB does not work

Asked by ionothanus

I used to use Dapper, where everything worked fine, but decided to update to Edgy. During the live CD boot, the X server crashed just like it did in Dapper (the "ati" driver fails with my X800, although that is what both live CD's attempt to use.). However, unlike in Dapper, when it crashed on the Edgy live CD it took USB support with it. I have no idea why, but since then I have had to use a PS/2 keyboard and mouse (both of which I hate, because my good keyboard and mouse are USB only). I thought it was an input issue, but I've now realized that my USB flash drive also does not work. All of the devices get power, but nothing functions, and I don't know why. My dmesg output will be attached if I can figure out how. Clearly, it should work; it did in Dapper. I have a MSI RS480M2-IL motherboard with an Athlon 64 3500+ Winchester, trying to use the i386 release of Edgy.

My apologies, but I couldn't find a way to attach a file. I did, however, see something in the dmesg output that looked relevant to the untrained eye, and I've pasted it here. If it's useless and someone would like the rest of the dmesg output, just let me know.

One suggestion in amongst that lot was "[17179578.592000] irq 217: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)". To try this do the following.

Boot your PC until it gets past the BIOS and you see grub counting down.
Press escape, you will see a menu of kernels that can be booted. Usually the top one is the default, there may only be two lines.
Highlight the first one (probably already highlighted) and press "e" to edit. A new menu will appear.
Press down once then press "e" on the line that starts "kernel". You're now editing that line.
Backspace to remove "quiet" and "nosplash" and instead add in "irqpoll" (without the quotes) as per the suggestion above.
Press Enter when you have finished typing, then "b" to boot.

Other options which you can try instead of "irqpoll" which may or may not help are "noapic" "noacpi" and "acpi=off". Can you try each one individually and see if any of them help?

I have taken some screenshots of that editing process for you because it can be a little scary.

Here they are. http://gallery.popey.com/gallery/grub

Thanks for the speedy replies. I guess if I had been thinking, the irqpoll suggestion would've been really obvious, but then I wouldn't have even known where to put that... For some reason, that worked perfectly, but why it is suddenly needed now, I do not know. Either way, the problem is solved. Thanks muchly.
